# How to Make Bass Audible on Small Speakers

## Why bass disappears on small speakers

Small drivers have limited excursion, small enclosures cannot support deep extension, and most devices add protective filtering and limiting. Devices vary widely and there is no single frequency where phone bass stops, but deep fundamentals are usually heavily reduced. A sine-heavy 808 keeps almost all of its energy at the fundamental, so little remains when that is lost. A bass guitar carries string harmonics, pickup, finger or pick noise and amp character higher up, so it usually stays identifiable.

## The missing fundamental

A note with a 50 Hz fundamental also has harmonics at 100, 150, 200 and 250 Hz, all spaced 50 Hz apart. When playback strongly reduces 50 Hz but reproduces enough of those related harmonics, listeners still tend to perceive the 50 Hz pitch. This is perception, not physical reconstruction: the pitch and musical information survive, the physical weight does not. It works best with several consecutive harmonics present.

- EQ is often the simplest fix for harmonically rich sources such as bass guitar, but a boost where a near-sine 808 has no energy achieves little.
- Saturation is nonlinear and adds harmonics (symmetrical clipping mostly odd, asymmetrical also even). Parallel or multiband saturation keeps the clean sub while adding harmonics above it.
- Layering a clean sub with a higher, more harmonic layer works during production; it is less practical with only a rendered stem.

1. Get the 808 right on full-range monitoring first.
2. Check a representative section with its lowest notes on a phone, laptop or small speaker.

5. If it does, EQ may be enough.
6. If not, try controlled saturation, a higher layer or psychoacoustic bass enhancement.
7. Level-match processed and bypassed versions; louder is not better.
8. Recheck on the full-range system so the original character survives.

### Bass guitar

Start with arrangement, balance and EQ, listening for note definition, body, string and amp character rather than raising the deepest frequencies. Add saturation for harmonic density, and use a psychoacoustic enhancer if low notes still lose too much perceived weight. Compare at matched levels.

### Kick

A kick has a low fundamental, a body and a transient. Translation is often solved by balancing the body or attack. If the low fundamental carries the musical weight and drops out badly, harmonic enhancement can help. Treat kick and bass together: aggressive harmonics on both moves masking into the low mids.

### Whole mix or master

Bass enhancement can work on a bus or master, but individual tracks give more control, since a master processor responds to every low element at once. Use conservative settings, watch the limiter, and always level-match.

## Why boosting more sub often makes it worse

An 808 at 45 Hz sounds right on monitors; a small system reproduces little of it; the producer adds 5 dB at 45 Hz. Do not mix on a phone; use it as a check.

1. Establish the mix on monitoring you trust.
2. Check a bass-heavy passage through a phone, laptop or other limited system.
3. Do not expect the same physical sub.
4. Listen for whether the notes, rhythm and kick/bass relationship survive.
5. Return to the main monitoring and make the smallest change necessary.
6. Check again.

Play files directly rather than through re-encoding messaging apps, and check at moderate as well as loud volume, since many small devices limit bass more as they get louder. ### Why can't I hear my 808 on phone speakers?

Phone speakers reproduce very little of the region where an 808's fundamental sits, and many 808s put nearly all their energy there.
